Just finished these fun characters. I loved making each one and watching as personalities were born. I enjoyed the haphazard method of creating these one-of-a-kind creatures. I begin by selecting the type of clay. Some were red, some white and some a blend of colors. Then I hand build the body and model the eyes and possibly some other facial expression. (whatever mood strikes me.) Attaching the tentacles is the real challenge yet also really fun. This is where the whole thing can blow up in the firing if not attached properly. They are very fragile until fired and remain delicate little creatures even after firing. I experimented with many combinations of glazes to achieve the various effects in the glaze. This is the tedious and boring part for me but the results are exciting. There is nothing more exciting than opening a kiln and seeing your creations!
